Google's Nuvem cable lands at Sines

Google inaugurated its Nuvem transatlantic submarine cable system on 21 July 2026, at a ceremony held at the Lisbon Oceanarium. The cable runs approximately 7,000 kilometres from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, touching Bermuda and the Azores before landing at Sines on Portugal's Alentejo coast.
Nuvem is designed with 16 fibre pairs and a planned capacity of 384 terabits per second, supplied by SubCom. The system is owned and operated by Starfish Infrastructure Inc., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Google LLC, meaning Google controls the physical layer of its intercontinental network end-to-end rather than purchasing shared capacity from telecoms consortiums. Meta is also building private transatlantic cables, while Microsoft leases capacity on third-party systems and Amazon Web Services uses a mixed owned-and-leased subsea strategy. Google's wholly owned model gives it direct command over latency, resilience, and cost across its AI and cloud estate without revenue leakage to third parties.
The cable lands at Areão beach in Sines, terminating at a new cable landing station owned by Angler Fish, with Sailfish as the landing party. The system is expected to be ready for service in the second half of 2026.
Sines already serves as the European landing point for EllaLink, which connects Europe directly to Brazil, and Google's own Equiano cable, which runs down the west coast of Africa to South Africa. With Nuvem now bridging North America, Sines becomes the only location in Europe where a campus operator can offer hyperscale tenants simultaneous high-capacity connectivity to North America, Africa, and Latin America via Google-owned, privately controlled fibre. Ireland, Spain, and the Nordic countries cannot currently replicate that combinatorial position.
The immediate beneficiary on the ground is Start Campus, which is developing a 1.2 GW data centre campus at Sines with a combined investment value of €8.5 billion in construction alone.

The Sines ecosystem already carries significant hyperscaler momentum. Microsoft announced a $10 billion investment in the Start Campus site in November 2025, following remarks by Brad Smith at Web Summit in Lisbon. Google's Nuvem inauguration deepens that commitment at the physical infrastructure layer rather than the tenancy layer.
Google also publicly unveiled a second Atlantic cable system, Sol, on 9 July 2025, which will connect Florida, Bermuda, the Azores, Spain, and mainland Portugal. Two Google-owned Atlantic cables announced within twelve months confirm the Iberian peninsula as the company's preferred European cable terminus cluster.
US Ambassador to Portugal John Arrigo spoke at the Nuvem inauguration ceremony and linked the cable to a broader capital projection.

The driver behind Google's infrastructure buildout is the vertical integration of AI services. Every interaction with Gemini, Google Search, and Google Cloud depends on intercontinental data transit. As AI model complexity grows, owning the physical cable rather than sharing consortium capacity compresses latency and removes a cost variable that scales directly with AI query volume.
Nuvem does not merely add bandwidth to the Atlantic. It anchors Sines as the pivot point of a three-continent private fibre network, and it gives any hyperscaler tenant at Start Campus a connectivity profile that no other European campus location currently offers.
